Areas: making of street art

As part of the Belfast City Council’s Re imaging communities project I was commissioned to design two 2 metre by 9 metre murals for the underpass of the Tate’s Avenue bridge, Donegall Avenue.

The following images document the making the project from initial concept to final artwork.

You can view detailed images of the Tates Avenue 'every street tells a story' mural in the projects area of David Creative.

This was my original concept for the Tate’s Avenue Re-imaging communities project tender. Rather than focus on celebrities that may have lived in the area I decided to celebrate the stories and the people that made the community what it is.
On winning the tender, the Belfast City Council was keen to develop a second mural to be placed on the opposite wall of the underpass. Through consultations with the community representatives a second mural was developed to illustrate the Bog Meadows, an area memorable to the community when they were children for playing games and catching tadpoles.

In consultation with the community representatives the Austin seven was replaced with a Nummy grocery van and the street was shortened to reveal a row of terrace houses in the background. First person handwritten descriptions were also added to link with the idea that the old man was recounting his memories of the area.

In consultation with the community representatives a few gypsy caravans were added to the Bog Meadows background. A police officer was added to link in with the pitch and toss game the men are playing in the middle. As they were gambling someone always had to lookout for an approaching officer to avoid them being caught.

I then sketched in the characters to scale in Adobe Photoshop using a tablet. Once I was happy with their placement and size I printed out each character in red and inked over them.
. © Copyright David McClelland 2011. All rights reservedThe characters were printed out in red as a guide that could then be taken out in Adobe Photoshop once scanned in leaving only the black lines.
Once the black line art of the characters was cleaned up I started to add tone on a separate layer, then outputted them as two separate files to be traced in Adobe Illustrator.
As the final artwork was going to be a size of 2 metres high by 9 metres wide the artwork needed to be supplied as an Adobe Illustrator vector file as the Adobe Photoshop pixel based file would be simply too big to work with.

The artworks where then outputted as Adobe Illustrator EPS files and printed onto metal panels. . © Copyright David McClelland 2011. Areas: storyboards

I have just finished a series of 14 storyboards for a Tiger beer advertising pitch. As is the case with all pitch work I cannot show you all of them but I’ve included one of my favourites below.

Areas: music textiles

I was recently commissioned to illustrate a new tee shirt design for the Scottish band Little Doses, based upon the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff guitar pedal.

If you want one of these you can buy either a white on red or a cyan on black tee shirt at the Little Doses store.

Areas: making of paintings street art

In the summer of 2010 I was invited to be part of a 2-day street art and music festival ‘Base’ in Belfast alongside greats like Mr Kern and Elph.
Below I’ve included a step by step of how the piece was built up from inspiration to final piece.

My inspiration for the piece came from the painting above “lost sheep” where for the first time I was starting to combine my painting with my narrative illustration. I liked the idea of illustrative characters mixing with a painted scene to create a new interpretation of the scene.. © Copyright David McClelland 2011. Areas: character design sketches

Early last year I was commissioned by Film Trip to design several characters for their upcoming production The Beat Hotel. The Beat Hotel is a music puppet show, a dark comedy set in a purpose-built hotel.

As they have released a pilot for the show I can now show you some of my designs and pictures of how the puppets turned out, without letting the cat out of the bag.
