Areas: sketches

On Sunday afternoon, I finally managed to get along to see Arthur Miller’s The Crucible in the recently opened Lyric Theatre. As always I brought my sketchbook to capture a memory of the day.

I found it interesting how they’d cast the characters. In particular Reverend Parris who was small with a Napoleon complex of trying to keep his parish together against the towering Judge Danforth that took authority of the court unrepentant of the concept that he may of made a mistake.

The rugged character of John Proctor spoke with a normal man’s reason to show the lunacy, greed and pride bubbling up in the other characters.

I thoroughly enjoyed the production of the play and will definitely be back to the Lyric Theatre.

Areas: sketches

Yesterday afternoon, I had the pleasure to see and sketch Fionnuala Kennedy’s HOSTEL in the refurbished Crescent Arts Centre. HOSTEL is based on the Finn’s own experience of living in a hostel for young families.

Produced by KABOSH an independent, multiaward-winning, Belfast-based theatre company.

I found it amazing how two if the actors could slip in and out of several characters within the play using small props, posture and colourful language!

A truly excellent play that reminds me of the struggles some people have to face by no fault of their own.

Areas: comics viewpoint

As a freelance illustrator I find I am vulnerable to comparing my work to ‘more successful’ illustrators’ work. This in turn can result in an opinion that I am failing in some way.

The truth is I could never be like Jillian Tamaki or Tomer Hanuka because I’m not Jillian Tamaki or Tomer Hanuka; I am David McClelland.

In realising this I drew the mini comic “function” which helped me get a grasp of how to appreciate who I am as an artist and which direction I should follow based upon who I am rather than what other people say I should be.

I hope it helps you as much as it has done for me.

Areas: character design comics workshops

Last weekend I was one of the many tutors at the Family Fun Weekend at the Belfast Waterfront Hall.

I was leading a comic book workshop for 8-14yrs teaching them how to create their own characters and story culminating in an eight-page comic. With the help of the http://www.youngatart.co.uk<Young at Art><blank> volunteers we made badges of our characters, which really added value to the comic.

It was intriguing to see how the children’s stories differed between the age ranges. I noticed that a few of the older children seemed to be hampered by the idea that they had to create something similar to what they’d already seen in comics or on television to make it worthwhile. Whereas the majority of the younger children were happy to experiment with their character and story creating some story lines that were truly unique.

This made me think that whilst I need to create illustrations that conform to what people already understand I shouldn’t allow it to hamper my creativity.

Areas: self promotion sketches

For me business cards get old really quickly.

Now being an artist I should include a piece of work on my business cards but if it takes me a year to move a bunch of cards that image can suddenly get old and irrelevant.

My solution was to print out blank business cards and use them as a mini sketchbook creating individual pieces of art reflecting the time, my surrounding and what I’m thinking about.
